Previous FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to US legislators and obstructing a legislative process.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer stated he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for several factors including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the court they aimed to submit multiple petitions to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

The former director's case was initially overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into another opponent - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey appeared in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, leading to negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey lied to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by stating he had not authorized an individual at the agency to disclose to news outlets data about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was innocent and charged Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"We have known for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."

These allegations against the former director came after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and additional individuals.
